Internet Addiction?

Addictions are a topic where when people first hear about it, they think of drug abuse, alcoholics, or gambling. Never would I think about being addicted to the internet as a major addiction. There are cases though where people have actually died by being addicted to the internet. In Born Digital there are 3 cases where lives have been lost because of internet addiction. “A South Korean addict died after playing nonstop for 86 hours. An overweight 26 year old man from north-eastern China died after a ceaseless gaming session over the Lunar New Year holiday. A 30 year old man has died in the south China province of Guangzhou after playing an online game continuously for three days.” This shows how dangerous It is to become completely consumed by modern technology.
By being an addict and using digital technology, a person will place a strain on their friendships and also within their families as well as in the work place. All of the information a person is exposed to can be overwhelming. The way that children are now brought up is that as soon as they get home they run over to the computer and get online to be a part of whatever social network is popular at the time. This is an extremely bad habit to start because it will lead to an internet addiction. When a child or a person starts to lie about how much time they spend on the internet, it is a sign of an internet addiction.
Any addiction can be detrimental to a person’s health; an internet addiction can cause people an extreme amount of stress as well as well as not provide enough exercise and time with family and friends as well. People also can become too caught up in all the information they are reading and end up losing track of time and spending all of their day learning information on the internet that may not even be accurate or reliable information. Internet addiction is a real thing that parents need to worry about for their children and of this modern day generation.

  1. You point out a relatively recent yet fairly common form of Internet addiction - excessive preoccupation with social networking. Although we might "laugh it off" and think that this statement clearly doesn't apply to us, we probably all know people who cannot go ten minutes without checking Facebook or updating their status.

  2. Wow i seriously had never heard of someone dying because of internet addiction! That is really crazy! Sometimes I feel bad for being on the internet for 2 hours but for 3 days, that's just taking it to another extreme! You are right parents should really keep an eye on their kids internet use because little things like that can't help prevent later problems with the internet!!
