Eating Disorders combined with Identity

The reason why I am beginning to write about eating disorders and the way it relates to identity is because I had just realized the way people may think of the way they look by the amount of media bombarding them everywhere they go. A girl may see any magazine like cosmo, seventeen, vogue, etc., and feel that the way she looks is inadequate. A girl then will go home and end up not eating in fear that she will gain weight or throw up whatever food they ate that night. Or maybe she was a former athlete who worked out maybe 25 hours a week. She didn't have to worry about what she ate because she worked so hard for her sport. Now as she gains weight she doesn't have that title of the fit and sexy gymnastics girl. It just shows the extent of what a person may do to have a certain image. Males are just as likely to have an eating disorder as females. A man sees in every movie that the guy that all the girls are drooling over has a six pack and big arms. Media changes the way people view their bodies because they are always trying to be involved in the most recent trends. They do these things in order to fit in and try and do it all for the image.

  1. The media can sometimes by a horrible thing. It persuades us to buy things and do things that we wouldn't normally do. Like you said, the media is influencing teenagers to attempt to reach thing near impossible image of "perfection" by the way magazines and ads depict them. Despite the campaigns that go against anorexia and bulimia, it seems that this problem will never go away seeing as the pictures are just getting worse.

  2. I have to agree with Rusty. Its frustrating how the media is campaigning against eating disorders and the "rail thin" look that is so sought after and yet we are continuously told to idolize celebrities that are sickeningly skinny or obviously have some sort of disorder. I also liked that you talked about guys having just as tough of a time with body image as girls. A lot of times men aren't mentioned when it comes to eating disorders and body image insecurity, but I have a family member hospitalized once because he worked out too much, trying ot attain that perfect physique and he almost died.
