In this article I had set the grounds for Bulimia to be about the cause of Bulimia. “The cause of Bulimia is not clear, but it probably results from a combination of family history, social values (such as admiring thinness), and certain personality traits.” It is clear that family history has a role in the cause of Bulimia, though it may not be the cause for everyone. “Your risk for developing Bulimia increases if your parent, sister, or brother has the condition.”
With this information in mind I grabbed a claim from the article which said that “Socially, [women] may accept and encourage destructive behaviors like extreme dieting or binging and purging.” Women do this because they were brought up being taught that being thin was an indicator of being pretty. It doesn’t help that all the famous actresses and singers are thin. These women are role models to the next generation and when girls see them they want to be skinny like them. This then leads to girls trying anything they can in order to be skinny, even doing destructive things to their bodies.
The warrant I gave to the article was “Many young women, such as those in college or high school, have unhealthy attitudes toward eating and toward their bodies.” This also refers to how the social values of this generation are that being skinny makes a woman more attractive. It is horrible that a girl feels that external beauty is the only thing that a man can judge her beauty on. A woman should realize that if a guy is only attracted to a girl because of her looks than that guy isn’t the right girl for her. That is just my opinion.
I completely agree with what you said about how in today's society, many women feel like they have to be skinny to be pretty and their physical appearance is the only thing that matters. I think it is important for women to understand that it is so much more than physical beauty, but inner beauty, personality, and many other factors that make women beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI think it really is sad that society is based so highly on external looks. Especially with the girls around our age we have never known anything different. Many girls have stuck in their head that skinny is the only pretty;however, as I have learned in my nutrition classes someone can look overweight and be more healthy than a skinny person.
