Eating Disorders combined with Identity

The reason why I am beginning to write about eating disorders and the way it relates to identity is because I had just realized the way people may think of the way they look by the amount of media bombarding them everywhere they go. A girl may see any magazine like cosmo, seventeen, vogue, etc., and feel that the way she looks is inadequate. A girl then will go home and end up not eating in fear that she will gain weight or throw up whatever food they ate that night. Or maybe she was a former athlete who worked out maybe 25 hours a week. She didn't have to worry about what she ate because she worked so hard for her sport. Now as she gains weight she doesn't have that title of the fit and sexy gymnastics girl. It just shows the extent of what a person may do to have a certain image. Males are just as likely to have an eating disorder as females. A man sees in every movie that the guy that all the girls are drooling over has a six pack and big arms. Media changes the way people view their bodies because they are always trying to be involved in the most recent trends. They do these things in order to fit in and try and do it all for the image.

Bulimia Nervosa

In this article I had set the grounds for Bulimia to be about the cause of Bulimia. “The cause of Bulimia is not clear, but it probably results from a combination of family history, social values (such as admiring thinness), and certain personality traits.” It is clear that family history has a role in the cause of Bulimia, though it may not be the cause for everyone. “Your risk for developing Bulimia increases if your parent, sister, or brother has the condition.”
With this information in mind I grabbed a claim from the article which said that “Socially, [women] may accept and encourage destructive behaviors like extreme dieting or binging and purging.” Women do this because they were brought up being taught that being thin was an indicator of being pretty. It doesn’t help that all the famous actresses and singers are thin. These women are role models to the next generation and when girls see them they want to be skinny like them. This then leads to girls trying anything they can in order to be skinny, even doing destructive things to their bodies.
The warrant I gave to the article was “Many young women, such as those in college or high school, have unhealthy attitudes toward eating and toward their bodies.” This also refers to how the social values of this generation are that being skinny makes a woman more attractive.  It is horrible that a girl feels that external beauty is the only thing that a man can judge her beauty on. A woman should realize that if a guy is only attracted to a girl because of her looks than that guy isn’t the right girl for her. That is just my opinion.

Internet Addiction?

Addictions are a topic where when people first hear about it, they think of drug abuse, alcoholics, or gambling. Never would I think about being addicted to the internet as a major addiction. There are cases though where people have actually died by being addicted to the internet. In Born Digital there are 3 cases where lives have been lost because of internet addiction. “A South Korean addict died after playing nonstop for 86 hours. An overweight 26 year old man from north-eastern China died after a ceaseless gaming session over the Lunar New Year holiday. A 30 year old man has died in the south China province of Guangzhou after playing an online game continuously for three days.” This shows how dangerous It is to become completely consumed by modern technology.
By being an addict and using digital technology, a person will place a strain on their friendships and also within their families as well as in the work place. All of the information a person is exposed to can be overwhelming. The way that children are now brought up is that as soon as they get home they run over to the computer and get online to be a part of whatever social network is popular at the time. This is an extremely bad habit to start because it will lead to an internet addiction. When a child or a person starts to lie about how much time they spend on the internet, it is a sign of an internet addiction.
Any addiction can be detrimental to a person’s health; an internet addiction can cause people an extreme amount of stress as well as well as not provide enough exercise and time with family and friends as well. People also can become too caught up in all the information they are reading and end up losing track of time and spending all of their day learning information on the internet that may not even be accurate or reliable information. Internet addiction is a real thing that parents need to worry about for their children and of this modern day generation.

Security

I read two blogs with some sort of ties into safety. The first was named “Facebook Friends?” It was about how the author had made about 892 friends on Facebook, but really only truly knew maybe 500 of them. The blog spoke about how each and every one of his “friends” was able to access all of the information he had posted on Facebook. The author gave advice to one a month to delete the people that you truly don’t talk to, or hardly even know. It suggested that once a month changing your password and checking over your friends list was the author’s advice in order to stay safe.
The second blog I read was called “Technology can be safe” and spoke about how because of technology people are able to receive warnings ahead of time. The example the author used was the wild fire in Bastrop. People were able to co-ordinate an evacuation plan at a fast and effective rate. The author also noted that with technology and all of the social networks out there, many donation drives and charity functions are able to advertise and make a larger contribution.
These both tie in together in a way because they both talk about safety. Yes social networking can be dangerous because there are predators out there, but it also creates a way to communicate at a faster rate than without technology. In the end it is a give and take, you may have to give up some of your own safety in order to be better prepared for other instances that could help save more than yourself.

Modern day Pirates

In this day of age it is as if it is acceptable for people to download songs and videos from the internet for free. People believe that since it is only a dollar for one song they think it won’t affect the artist much, the only problem is that there are a million people who believe the same exact thing. The music industry suffered greatly when Napster, Kazaa, Limewire, etc, all of these websites where peer to peer sharing of songs happened.
One of the big reasons why all of this is possible is because an individual is not physically stealing. There is not the action of stealing or the risk of being caught is extremely slim. The only problem with online pirating is that if you are caught, it ends up with a large sum of money coming out of pocket just for not paying for a few songs on the internet. In my opinion it is as if the person is desensitized to the act of stealing because there is no physical act.
The availability of free songs has been made to be so easy that all you have to do is type in free music download into Google and will find out multiple sites where you can download all the songs that you care to have. Children require the knowledge that downloading free music is the equivalent of walking into the nearest Best Buy and stealing the newest and most popular CD’s of the famous artist around.
